4th of July, Farang Style

The great American holiday came around and we wanted to make sure we didn't forget out home country. Some girls we met here this semester set up a party for about 30 of our (mostly new!) farang friends. It was set at a guesthouse about an hour 1/2 from Chaiyaphum so Felix, myself, and our friends from last semester, Julia and Guy decided to make a motorbike roadtrip out of it.

We got on the bikes in the morning and began the long-haul to Nong Bua Daeng. For being on an uncomfortable motorbike, it was not the easiest ride, but I was so happy to do it because until then I had not realized the beauty of the region we are living in. The whole ride was gorgeous, with giant rolling mountains in the distance, and lush vegetation and wet rice fields surrounding us on both sides. The trip took us in the real countryside through little towns and thai-style houses adored with sleepy residents laying in hammocks with geese and chickens running around their hanging feet. We followed the road up a mountain to beautiful views, and curved our way down the winding road until FINALLY, though a bit sore, bug-pelted, and oddly sunburn from the ride, we had arrived at our destination.

The guesthouse was made up of little bungalows surrounding a big pool (a body of water to swim in...YESSSS!). We were the first to arrive so jumped in and hung out a bit before the big group amassed. Once everyone arrived we swam around and kicked back on our bungalow porches until it was time to grill out. One of the guesthouse owners had gone to the market for us and bought as much food as she could, which landed us with a few kind of meats and a giant salad. We grilled out and swam and got as close to celebrating the real holiday as we could (yes.. no fireworks.. but some kind of small explosives were set off later). With all the Americans together we were sure to do our best rendition of the Star Spangled Banner, whichhhh was followed by the Canadian, Ireland, South American, and the best we could hum of the Thailand Anthem. Hey.. we didn't want to leave anyone out.

We had a great night, mostly in the pool, and got up to head back to the home town to rest up. On the way back.. to keep up with the all things American theme we stopped in a town that had a "Farang Bar" run by a foreigner, with all foods that farangs love, and each ordered a pizza and plate of french fries, leaving us ready for a nap instead of another hour on the bike.

So here in Thailand we did the best we could to celebrate. We grilled for the first time, spent every second we could in a pool, and then well.. ate some more. That's about the best we got, but it was a good time nevertheless.

Happy Belated 4th everyone! My thoughts were with my home country even from across globe :)
